Migliaccio & Rathod is involved in the City of Hope data breach investigation.
Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the City of Hope data breach investigation, for a data breach affecting over 827,149 individuals and their personal information.
On or about October 13, 2023, City of Hope became aware of suspicious activity on its computer systems. City of Hope subsequently launched an investigation, where it learned that a cybercriminal had gained access to its systems and obtained some of its patients’ files. The treatment center provided initial notice to those potentially affected by the data breach that could be notified via email on December 14, 2023. After another investigation, City of Hope claims to have identified those individuals whose personal information was actually impacted by the cyber incident. The exact nature of the compromised private health information is unclear, yet it includes names and Social Security numbers.
City of Hope recently began informing individuals of this breach through a mailed notice letter. All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
